It’s that time of the year again. New Year’s resolutions. How many times have you promised yourself you would get into a regular workout routine, only to fall off the wagon by February?
Most folks don’t have an issue with the exercise itself, but find getting started the hardest part.
It really comes down to this. You have two options for every decision you make: you can either take a step closer towards your goal, or further away from it. It’s time to take responsibility for your choices.
Here are the Top 6 tips on how to find motivation to workout:
1. Connect with Your “Why”
It’s really important to connect with and understand the reason why you are working out. Your underlying goal is a major motivator. Sure, you want to lose 10 pounds – but WHY? Why right now? Acknowledging this feeling and finding your inner drive will be a powerful motivator on the days you want to hit snooze and roll over.
2. Set Achievable Goals
Getting up an hour early to workout seems like an awesome idea on a Sunday afternoon. But come Monday morning it can turn into a case of “what the hell was I thinking” as you hit the snooze button one last time. Build your confidence by achieving small goals. Start by waking up 15 minutes early to exercise and make this a new habit first. Set yourself up for success.
3. Just Start
Do whatever it takes to get started. On days when I don’t feel like working out, I’ll tell myself that I’ll just go to the gym and do a warm up for 15 minutes. You’ll be surprised how well this trick works. More often not, once you get started you’ll keep going and finish the workout.
4. Have a Plan
Walking into a workout blind is just as bad as grocery shopping hungry without a list. You’ll waste time wandering around, analyze all kinds of possibilities and come home without accomplishing what you set out to do. Not only is this a waste of time, but also you’re under a false pretense that you’re actually being productive. Get yourself on a customized workout program and make sure you change it up every month.
5. Accountability
Who is keeping an eye on you? Get yourself a workout buddy. However, be careful who you choose. Ideally, workout with a person fitter or stronger than you, who you aspire to be like. This will make you play up a level and push your limits. It also helps if they are really cute.
6. Prepare for any situation
Don’t let trivial issues get in your way. Have your workout gear with you or laid out the night before. Be flexible with your workout time. Yes you need to prioritize it, but have a back up time for your workout if something comes up. Try to schedule your workouts like you would any important meeting or appointment. Do not cancel.
Bonus tip: Never, Ever Give up
It doesn’t matter how many mistakes you make, or how slow your progress, you can never, ever quit. The only failure is when you quit.
Working out doesn’t have to be a drag. Vary your training, do something you enjoy and make it fun.
Good luck kicking butt in 2013!
