Sorry, but I’m only human….
“Sorry, but I’m only human.”
These are words we tell ourselves to admit that we are vulnerable and that we all have fears.
Our fears may be deep or just on the surface but, we all have them! Sometimes they run our lives and prevent us from being less then awesome!
This weekend I watched a very inspiring, life changing movie. One that should be on every self help/motivational movie list. You must promise to see it, promise?
So, what movie was it?
None other then…….”The Green Lantern” (you know, the superhero – starring one Mr. Ryan Reynolds). Although it may not win any Oscars, it had a very strong and important message:
We all have FEARS and our FEARS weaken us. However, it’s our WILL that drives our life force in overcoming our FEARS to create the life we want to life.
Each one of us has an ideal life we set out to accomplish. But for most of us, that life is never accomplished because our fears get in the way and weaken our mindset.
Below I’ve listed some amazing key points I’ve learned from “The Green Lantern” which I believe may be of great service to you!
WILL IS THE STRONGEST SOURCE OF ENERGY IN THE UNIVERSE.
“Will has always been our sole weapon against the forces of darkness in the universe”.
Will is the combination of power and determination. It is this blend of forces that allows us to triumph through the toughest parts of our lives. Will gives us the strength to dig deeper and achieve more. Without the will of man, dreams would die, imagination and creativity would be crushed, and our life force would fade. When the darkness of fear overshadows our mind, it is our will that lights our path and leads us to success!
How can you apply a strong will into your life right now? How would your life change?
WE ARE NOT FEARLESS, BUT WE ARE COURAGEOUS.
“Don’t give in to fear. Fight it.”
In “The Green Lantern” series, only those who show that they are courageous can be deemed worthy of possessing a special ring which enhances ones will into a magical force. It is recognized that fear is a natural part of living. Don’t be ashamed of your fear! However, finding the courage to overcome what scares you and having the will to perceiver, is what allows us to learn from life’s lessons and continue to grow into amazing people!
Have you ever worked through a fear? How did it make you feel? What did you learn from the situation?
IMAGINATION + MINDSET + DETERMINATION = SUPER HERO STRENGTH!
“Anything I see in my mind, I can create. I’ve just got to focus.”
This was my favorite lesson from The Green Lantern. It’s a reminder that we are always much stronger then we believe. Fears limit us and keep us contained into our tightly packaged lives. ANYTHING we see in our minds we can create! Do you think inventors like Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin or world leaders Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa allowed fear to hold them back from achieving greatness? No! Did they have fear, I’m sure they did. However, they had a strong imagination, focused mindset, and overwhelming determination to overcome life’s obstacles and hardships. This combination is what makes a super hero…..a super hero!
What visions do you have in life that are being limited by fear? How could your imagination, mindset, and determination help you to overcome it?
It’s important to remember that we ARE human. Which means we are vulnerable and fear is a natural part of life. We must find the courage to be strong in order to defeat lives “evil forces”! Super hero strength begins in the mind. Our imagination, mindset, and determination gives us the WILL to overcome our FEARS and triumph in life!

How Britney Spears has gotten me into the BEST shape of me life!
So here’s a little secret about me, I’m a hugh Britney Spears fan. Surprised? Those who truly know me may understand and appreciate my fascination. However, being a Holistic Health Coach and classically trained musician, I may have some explaining to do!
Well, I’m a fan of fun music that makes me want to dance and puts a smile on my face. Britney’s music is energetic and carefree! I use her songs to get me out of a funk, motivate me to exercise, and to throw random dance parties (which I’m the only one in attendance).
Now, she may not always exude health and wellness, but I have learned several key points through some of her most memorable songs!
“Do Somethin”
The first mistake people make when it comes to their health is the unwillingness to just get up and “DO SOMETHIN”! Many people lack the energy and drive to improve their current situation. Fast food, long work days, and stressful lives often leave people feeling run down and hopeless. There comes a point when you just have to say “enough is enough”, then get up off your butt and “DO SOMETHIN”! Easier said then done, I know. However creating a solid, step by step plan, that involves gradual changes is a great beginning for lasting improvements to your health.
- Start off with 10 -15 mins for exercise.
- Drink one more glass of water each day.
- Try a new green vegetable every week.
- Inspire yourself with pictures, quotes, and uplifting people.
- Learn to follow your breathe and relax.
“Oops I did it again”
Truthfully, many people fail at their first attempts at becoming healthy. This may be attributed to frustration, impatience, daily obstacles, or lack of support and motivation. They try again and again to stick to a routine but always end up saying, “OOPS I DID IT AGAIN” and they return back to their old ways. What most people don’t understand is, this does not mean you are a lost cause and will never be able to get your health on track! Each moment of your life you are capable of starting a new! It’s a choice you make whether to get up and start again. Here are some tips to stay on track:
- Schedule exercise into your day (like you would do an appointment).
- Get others to hold you accountable.
- Prepare your menu for the week on Sunday.
- Cook enough for two meals.
- Find time to spend alone in order to reflect on your progress.
“Toxic”
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid toxins throughout our day. They’re in our air, water, plastic, and food. Amongst other things like household cleaners and perfumes. Toxins can cause disease, organ failure, and even death. The good news is, your exposure to certain toxins can be lessened by making a few simple changes.
- Avoid processed foods – additives and preservatives – harmful chemicals you want to keep out of your diet – linked to IBS, inflammation, and cancer.
- Buy local and/or organic foods – less exposure to pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. Buy from local farmers, join a co-op, or grow your own food.
- Replace plastic with glass – BPA, a chemical found in plastic, has been linked to several cancers including breast and prostate.
- Get fresh air – fumes and carcinogens decrease the amount of oxygen in our air supply. Go out and play in nature!
Stronger
Exercise is such an important part of living a healthy lifestyle. It has been shown to improve mood, manage weight loss, and prevent many health concerns and diseases. Exercise makes us stronger physically by strengthening our muscles, joints, and bones and mentally by keeping us focused, determined, and confidant. If exercise is not a regular part of your day, follow these tips to get started!
- Find something you enjoy doing. There’s something for everyone! Try yoga, bike riding, going for a hike, or Crossfit. Think of nontraditional forms of exercise like gardening, walking your dog, or playing with your kids!
- Make it short but intense. Exercise doesn’t have to be long in order to be effective. You can get a great workout in just 20-30 mins. High intensity interval training, timed workouts, and tabata routines are great time saves and really get your heart rate up!
- Vary what you do. Do something different each time to keep you motivated and interested.
- Start off slow. Don’t feel like you have to be on the same routine as a competitive body builder right away. Make slow, gradual changes for the best results in making exercise a habit you can keep.
- Workout with a friend. Help motivate and push each other. You can even find some really fun partner workouts to do.
Dance until the world ends
This, by far is my, new favorite Britney song. It’s fun, carefree, and reminds me of a very important lesson, to stay determined and to not take life too seriously (although I’m sure in reality it has a completely different meaning – this is Britney after all). It gets me pumped up right before a workout and keeps me smiling! Sometimes blasting your favorite music and just dancing up a storm is the best remedy to forgetting your troubles and reseting your intentions. Dancing can help prevent depression and stress, and it helps to establish our self-confidence and discipline.
See the sunlight, we ain’t stopping
Keep on dancing till the world ends
If you feel it let it happen
Keep on dancing till the world ends
I hope these tips from the “Princess of Pop” can help you establish a healthy lifestyle, makes you smile, and keep you dancing! Take slow steps, nourish yourself with nutritious foods and just get up and “Do Somethin”!

Nourishing Your Family With Beautiful Foods
“Food that’s beautiful to look at seems to taste better than food that isn’t.”
Emeril Lagasse
If you’re like most people, when you look down at your dinner plate, you’ll most likely see two colors, beige and white. On a good day, if you’re feeling adventures, perhaps a pale green. Foods with these shades are probably fried (beige), refined (white), and frozen (pale green). Now although all colors are beautiful in their own right and in the correct setting, this particular combination at dinner time calls for a little sprucing up!
As a kid, I remember dinner time being like entering an art gallery! There were so many different colors and textures. The food always looked inspiring and was presented with love and from a place of beauty. I was very fortunate to have this experience as a child. As an adult, I not only see food as nourishment but something to respect and admire.
Turing an otherwise dull and boring dinner plate palette into an artistic expression of colorful cuisine is easier then you think! Ditch the “dead” grub and add more LIVING, LOVING, FRESH WHOLESOME FOODS!
Below is a simple list of Beautiful Foods to help you get started!
Swiss Chard:
Swiss chard is a gorgeous vegetable to look at. The stems have beautiful shades of reds, yellows, and purples which reach up and blend through their deep, dark green leafs. The added health benefits of swiss chard make this vegetable even more attractive. They are a great source of phytonutriants which is a plant chemical which is known for its protective, disease-preventing compounds. Those colorful stems are more then just for show. They contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification agents.
Peppers:
Peppers are one of the most diverse vegetables pertaining to color and beauty. They come in a rainbow of shades, including green, red, yellow, orange, and even purple, brown, and black. I love placing fresh peppers in my salad not only for taste, but they really know how to brighten up a plate! Much like swiss chard, peppers are a top source for phytochemicals. In addition, they are loaded with fiber, vitamins, beta-carotene which may help protect against cancer.
Quinoa:
Quinoa is a grain-like crop that has been around for over 5,000 years. It was a staple crop to the Incas who believed it gave them power and stamina! They come in vibrant shapes of red and yellow. It is a complete protein which makes is suitable for vegetarians or those looking to cut back on meat intake. Quinoa is naturally gluten-free, making it an excellent food for those who have a sensitivity. It’s also high in iron and calcium, and is a good source of manganese, magnesium and copper, as well as fiber.
Papayas:
Papayas are bold, strong, and colorful fruit. The outsides have beautiful blends of greens, yellows, and oranges. On the inside the dark black seeds really stand out against the vibrant shades of orange. It’s actually very stunning to see! Papayas can be eaten fresh, juiced, fermented, or made into an herbal tea. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, C and E. They contain small amounts of calcium, iron, riboflavin, thiamine and niacin. It is also very rich in antioxidant nutrients flavonoids and carotenes, very high in vitamin C plus A, and low in calories and sodium.
Apples:
One can’t go wrong with apples! They really are a perfect fruit. Not only do they come in a variety of colors, but also textures and tastes! Apples have several protective properties that have been known to protect our bones, prevent alzheimer’s, lower cholesterol, and prevent cancer. They are also a great source of fiber and immune-boosting vitamin C.
I hope this list has shed some light on the benefits of adding color into your diet. Make some slow gradual changes, prepare your food with love and care, and before you know it, your plate will be your canvas!
“Enchant, stay beautiful and graceful, but do this, eat well. Bring the same consideration to the preparation of your food as you devote to your appearance. Let your dinner be a poem, like your dress.”
Charles Pierre Monselet, French author (1825-1888)

The “I don’t have time for exercise” Exercise Routine
The number one excuse I get from my clients concerning lack of exercise is that they don’t have time. I understand that most people over schedule themselves each day and exercise is usually put on the back burner. However, if you want to live a truly healthy life, one filled with energy and stamina, exercise is a must!
Below are several tips that I use both with myself and clients to get them started on a exercise routine that sticks!
Change your mindset
The first thing you have to do is get into the right mindset. It’s not enough to say, “Ok tomorrow I will begin”. Without a strong determination to get started, you will most likely fail. I suggest taking 10-15 minutes alone and talk to yourself. Not in the crazy kind of way, but in order to prepare your mind to commit and begin. It may be helpful to create a personal list of reasons why it’s so important to exercise. Perhaps you want to reduce the effects of heart disease, look good in a bathing suit, or have enough energy in the day. Developing a plan to incorporate exercise into your day should always begin by setting a solid foundation for success and that starts with your mind.
MAKE the time
Our days are jam packed with business meetings, commuting to work, and driving our kids from one activity to the next. It’s no wonder each day seems to fly by. So we must MAKE the time each day to exercise. Finding the time is easy but these changes do require a little but of discipline. Start by waking up a little earlier each day. Set your alarm clock five minutes earlier each day until you reach a half an hour. This should be enough time to get a good workout in (see below). Stop watching t.v. A lot of our day is wasted in front of the television. Several hours can we freed up just by reducing the amount of time we spend staring at the “boob tube”! Spend some time “unplugged”. We are all attached to our electronics! I’m guilty of it myself. Dedicate a certain block of time each day away from anything with an on and off button. You’ll be amazed at how much more productive you will become each day!
Do something you enjoy
Exercise shouldn’t really be a chore. Find something you look forward to doing! Something that inspires you and gets you pumped up! This does not have to be something traditional. Gardening, walking the dog, and washing your car are all activities that get your body moving. Or you may enjoy yoga, bike riding, running, using free weights, or taking a dance class. Whatever it is, you should like doing it. Also switch up your routine frequently so you don’t get board and loose motivation.
Make it short
There’s really no reason exercising should take a huge chunk of time to complete. A great workout can be completed in 20 – 30 minutes. Keep the intensity high and stay focused. Try sprinting, use the tabata formate or incorporate some high intensity internal training. You can also try 20 minutes of light stretching or yoga if you prefer something a little calmer. Do a little research on the internet. Youtube has tons of videos to help you get started. The possibilities are end less.
Turn it into a habit
Set a goal for one month to exercise each day for 10 – 30 minutes. Schedule this time into your day like an appointment or business meeting. Creating an exercise habit is easier then you think. Get people to hold you accountable. Tell everyone you know about your commitment. Journal or blog about your journey and create an environment that inspires you to stay active. Place motivational sayings or pictures around your house to keep you motivated. If a month seems too long to start begin with a week and build from there.
Living a holistically healthy life involves taking care of mind, body, and spirit. In my opinion, exercising is a great way to incorporate all three aspects. Follow the tips above to develop a routine that works for you. Stay strong, motivated, and have FUN!
